A majestic madrigal stage set, resplendent with heraldic flags and emblems hinted at another special night from one of the world's most innovative and captivating artists.

In spite of a cold and the Empress' famously awful acoustics Bjork shone like a beacon of inspiration. She dedicated 'The Ocean' to Blackpool and for a town on its heels it was a touching acknowledgement of hope.

Although a huge Bjork follower i have never been a big fan of songs such as The Hunter and Army of Me. But in a live environment and with the elaborate stage show, they suddenly made sense. State of Emergency and the heavily altered Hyberballad were frenetic and glorious (even the prog-rock style lasers made sense).

I have to admit to struggling with Volta a bit. In parts I loved it and in others found it dull and frustrating. Tonight gave one the impetus to revisit albums like Volta and Medulla to rediscover the special subtleties that only Bjork can provide you with.
