Detroit Social Club; Sunshine People (Fiction Records; 30/03/2009)

Languid, marching rock limps along and this second single seems like an ill-fated attempt to cover and record several Stone Roses numbers and the odd Kasabian track quickly for a relative’s 18th birthday party. Whilst the vocals have a slight Ian Brown vibe, none of his carefree, confident swagger of the past is replicated and lame drum beats do little to take the attention away from this.

‘Sunshine People’, lacks any of the mystery that the title implies it might possess and David Burns’ vocal performance is as static as the Manchester United defence trying to keep out a rejuvenated Liverpool.  Carrying on the same vibe only in an even lower key fashion, B-side ‘Cause and Consequence (Golden Sunshine Remix)’ has all the pounce of a tranquilised cat. Once Detroit Social Club decide whether or not they want to be an up and at ‘em indie dance troupe or stoner ambient protagonists? Then they will have direction and the foundation to erase this forgettable effort.
